Capacity prices
Whole-House Generator Cost by Size: 14–26 kW Compared
Compare current 14, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 kW equipment evidence, then add transfer, fuel, electrical, pad and permit scope.
Angi's September 2026 equipment observations are $4,000–$5,500 for 14–18 kW, $5,000–$6,500 for 20–24 kW and $6,500–$15,000 for 26–32 kW. These are unit-price bands, not installed totals or sizing recommendations.
What changes the result?
A useful calculation starts with the physical scope and the written commercial terms. These are the factors to make explicit:
- Rated kW on each fuel
- Essential, managed or whole-home load
- Air-cooled or larger equipment class
- Transfer and load-management package
- Installation route and service capacity
Use one scope for every quote
Give each business the same information and ask it to resolve the same boundaries. That makes the totals more comparable and exposes work left as an allowance or exclusion.
- Size the loads before pricing equipment
- Compare the same fuel rating
- Separate unit and switch package
- Add site work from a written design
Current generator-only examples by selectable size
Generac's current US catalog provides a consistent manufacturer snapshot for five named sizes, while the 20 kW band uses a current multi-source market range. These are equipment references, not installed totals, load recommendations or promises that one model fits the property.
- 14 kW: from $4,889
- 18 kW: from $5,709
- 20 kW: $5,000–$6,500 current market equipment band
- 22 kW: from $6,309
- 24 kW: from $6,729
- 26 kW: from $7,159
2026 equipment bands
The calculator maps its four selectable scenarios to Angi's current size classes.
- 14–18 kW: $4,000–$5,500 unit only
- 20–24 kW: $5,000–$6,500 unit only
- 26–32 kW: $6,500–$15,000 unit only
Installed cost grows differently from unit price
HomeGuide reports $3,000–$5,000 for ordinary installation and $5,000–$12,000 or more for long routes or systems above 20 kW. A larger unit may also need higher-capacity transfer equipment, fuel delivery, conductors and site access. Add those scopes rather than applying one percentage to the box price.
A kW label is not the whole design
Natural-gas output can differ from propane output on the same marketed model. HVAC starting current, electric heating, wells, pumps and EV charging can dominate the load. Compare the exact datasheet rating, supported-load schedule and load-management sequence before comparing prices.
Questions people ask
How much does a 14–18 kW generator cost?
Angi's September 2026 equipment-only range is $4,000–$5,500 before installation and project components.
How much does a 20–24 kW generator cost?
The current equipment-only observation is $5,000–$6,500. Installed work can add several thousand dollars.
How much does a 26 kW generator cost?
The 26–32 kW equipment band is $6,500–$15,000. Generac's cited current 26 kW generator-only model starts at $7,159 MSRP.
Does a larger generator always cover the whole house?
Not automatically. The exact fuel rating, simultaneous loads, starting currents, transfer design and load management determine coverage.
