22 kW Whole-House Generator Cost: Equipment and Installation
Separate a 22 kW generator package from fuel, electrical, placement and permit work before comparing installed quotes.
Angi's September 2026 capacity table places 20–24 kW equipment around $5,000–$6,500 before installation. Generac currently lists a specific 22 kW generator-and-transfer-switch bundle from $7,369 MSRP and separately states that many complete Generac systems run about $8,000–$16,000 installed. These are different scopes, not competing like-for-like totals.
What changes the result?
A useful calculation starts with the physical scope and the written commercial terms. These are the factors to make explicit:
- Exact generator output on the selected fuel
- Transfer switch and load management
- Pad, clearances and placement
- Fuel pressure, meter, tank and line work
- Electrical route, permits and startup
Use one scope for every quote
Give each business the same information and ask it to resolve the same boundaries. That makes the totals more comparable and exposes work left as an allowance or exclusion.
- Verify capacity from actual loads
- Compare exact model and transfer equipment
- Itemize fuel and electrical construction
- Confirm startup, warranty and owner handover
Keep equipment MSRP separate from installed cost
Generac's current 22 kW bundle page lists MSRP starting at $7,369 and includes named transfer equipment. Angi's broader 20–24 kW equipment observation is $5,000–$6,500, while Generac's sizing page states a complete-system range of $8,000–$16,000.
Record the exact model, fuel rating, transfer switch, included accessories, delivery and tax before comparing equipment figures. Then add the property-specific installation scope only once.
Twenty-two kilowatts is not a square-foot rule
Generator selection depends on simultaneous running loads, motor starting demand and which loads can be managed. Air conditioning, well pumps, electric heat, water heating, ranges and EV charging can dominate the calculation even in homes with similar floor area.
The current Generac model is rated differently on liquid propane and natural gas. Require the installer to show the design output on the actual fuel and document the load calculation or load-management strategy.
Build the complete quote
The quote should identify the pad or base, placement, clearances, transfer equipment, conductors, trench or raceway, gas line, pressure verification, meter or propane work, permits, inspection, startup, owner instruction and warranty registration.
Keep optional monitoring subscriptions, extended coverage, annual service and fuel-tank ownership outside the installation total unless the bid explicitly includes them.
Questions people ask
How much does a 22 kW whole-house generator cost installed?
Generac currently states many complete systems cost about $8,000–$16,000, while exact 22 kW projects can fall outside that range because fuel, electrical, placement and permit work differ.
How much is the 22 kW generator itself?
Angi's current 20–24 kW equipment observation is $5,000–$6,500. Generac lists one current 22 kW transfer-switch bundle from $7,369 MSRP; the model and included equipment must match before comparing.
Will 22 kW power my entire house?
Not automatically. Actual simultaneous and starting loads, fuel rating, transfer equipment and load management determine what can operate together.
Does the installed price include a gas-line upgrade?
Do not assume it does. Require fuel-line length, pressure verification, meter or regulator work and any propane tank scope to be itemized.
