Installation scope
Generator Installation Cost Calculator: Labor & Project Scope
Calculate a complete standby-generator installation budget, separating equipment, labor, transfer switch, fuel, electrical, pad and permit scope.
HomeGuide's current data puts ordinary whole-house generator installation labor around $3,000–$5,000, rising to $5,000–$12,000 or more for long routes or systems above 20 kW. Those figures are separate from the generator unit and may not include every transfer, fuel, pad, permit or panel item.

Installed planning range
$10,130–$18,850Midpoint: $14,490- Evidence reviewed 14 September 2026; every published band and modeled scope is identified in the methodology.
- The fuel-line allowance does not prove that the meter, regulator, tank, pipe or pressure is adequate.
- A qualified installer must size the generator, fuel system and electrical work and confirm permits, clearances and commissioning.
What changes the result?
A useful calculation starts with the physical scope and the written commercial terms. These are the factors to make explicit:
- Generator placement and equipment access
- Electrical route, service and transfer equipment
- Gas meter, regulator, piping or propane storage
- Pad, trenching and restoration
- Permits, startup, load test and warranty registration
Use one scope for every quote
Give each business the same information and ask it to resolve the same boundaries. That makes the totals more comparable and exposes work left as an allowance or exclusion.
- Request generator and installation as separate lines
- Confirm the fuel-capacity calculation
- Mark route lengths and restoration
- List permits, startup tests and exclusions
Current installation-only price bands
The useful comparison is the work around the unit. HomeGuide reports $3,000–$5,000 for ordinary installation and $5,000–$12,000 or more where routes are long or the generator exceeds 20 kW. The calculator uses those endpoints and exposes a middle planning band instead of multiplying the entire project by a hidden complexity factor.
- Straightforward core installation: $3,000–$5,000
- Long route or over 20 kW: $5,000–$12,000+
Keep package items from being counted twice
Some generator packages include a transfer switch; some installer totals include a pad, permit or short connection. Others do not. Enter a component only when it sits outside the equipment package and core installation allowance, then ask the contractor to use the same breakdown.
The design still controls the price
A qualified installer must confirm the connected and starting loads, transfer arrangement, conductor route, fuel demand and pressure, equipment clearances, flood or weather exposure and local permits. The quote should identify commissioning, owner instruction, warranty registration and the first maintenance requirement.
- Load and starting-current calculation
- Fuel demand and pressure verification
- Electrical one-line and transfer scope
- Site plan, clearances and route
- Permit, inspection and startup records
Questions people ask
How much is labor to install a whole-house generator?
Current national planning evidence is about $3,000–$5,000 for ordinary installation and $5,000–$12,000 or more for long routes or systems above 20 kW. The generator itself is separate.
Does generator installation include a transfer switch?
Not reliably. Some packages bundle it and others price it separately. Confirm the exact switch model, rating, labor and permit treatment before adding an allowance.
Why does distance from the panel or gas meter matter?
Longer routes add conductor, conduit or pipe, trenching, voltage-drop or pressure considerations, labor and restoration. Record measured route lengths in the quote.
Can I install a standby generator myself?
Permanent electrical and fuel connections create shock, fire, carbon-monoxide and backfeed hazards and are regulated locally. Use appropriately qualified professionals and obtain required permits and inspections.
